Older barns often sit on fieldstone or block. That comes out with the building and the hole gets filled. State law says the hole is filled back to grade and the extra material taken away. The ground is graded flat after, and land grading covers topsoil and seed if you want grass there.
The pile does not all go to one place. Concrete and metal go to recyclers where a job allows. Treated wood cannot be burned or buried on site under state rules. Some older buildings have asbestos in the siding or roofing, and a licensed abatement contractor takes that out first.
